Everybody wants healthy glowing skin – you are not alone, and exfoliation is the best way to make your skin roseate. It is the method of removing dead skin cells to brighten the outer layer.

There are various exfoliation methods, but you need to decide which one suits your skin type. A wrong method or too frequently exfoliation can take a toll on your skin colour and appearance.

Exfoliation is largely categorised into two methods: manual and over-the-counter chemical exfoliators. The former uses the tools like an exfoliation brush, sponge, glove, and scrub, and the latter uses AHAs and BHAs.

There are four types of skin: oily, dry, sensitive and normal, and for each type of skin, you need to use a different exfoliation method. For instance, if you have dry skin, manual exfoliation methods will cause small rips in your skin. Instead, you should use over-the-counter exfoliators that use AHAs.

Likewise, you should use a mild chemical exfoliator for oily skin. Note that you should moisture your skin after its use, whether you have dry or sensitive skin.

If you have oily skin, you can get benefit from the manual exfoliating process. If you have normal skin, you can use either of the methods. However, you will have to find out which one better works out for your skin.

How to exfoliate your face

If you are using a chemical-based exfoliator, you need to use a cotton pad to apply it all over your face, and then natural oils in it will automatically work with your dead cells. After the exfoliation, you can use the moisturiser.

A rule of thumb says that you should contact a dermatologist to know which exfoliator can work best for you. It becomes more essential if you have seborrhoeic dermatitis. If you want to do manual exfoliation, here is how you can do it.

You will have to take a small amount of scrub in your hand and apply it across your face. Keep moving your hands across it in a circular mode. You do not need to be harsh with your movement. Apply it in a circular mode gently. Do it for at least 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse your face with clear normal water.

After using a scrub, you will feel your skin a bit drier and flaky. Apply a moisturiser on your face to maintain the pH level of your skin. Note that when you use a towel to wipe your face, dab it instead of rubbing it hard. It may irritate your skin. It depends on your skin how many times you can exfoliate your face in a week. For some people, exfoliation once a week can be enough, while for others, twice a week can be justified.

How to exfoliate your body

The method you use for the exfoliation of your face may not be appropriate for your body. Here is what methods you need to use to exfoliate your overall body. You should use an exfoliating body wash. You can get it in any drug store.

However, if you are not able to pick the right one, you can consult your dermatologist. They can recommend you the one ideal for your skin. For instance, if you have seborrhoeic dermatitis, you may need a mild exfoliating scrub. You can use the scrub before you use the shower.

If you do not want to use chemical-based scrub or exfoliating body wash, you can use salt or sugar. It can make your skin supple, glowing and bright. Do not forget to apply body lotion after using it. The areas where you need to put extra effort are the elbows, ankles and knees.

You can use an exfoliating brush after applying sugar, salt or scrub on your body. However, you should use the sponge for delicate areas like the inner thighs. You can use it for the complete body if you are not comfortable with using a brush. Move the sponge in a circular motion to get the best results.

When is the exfoliation too frequent?

How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin. When you exfoliate your skin, you should see the result and notice how long the impact lasts.

Some exfoliators can be too harsh and can leave your skin dry, scaly and itchy for a long time despite moisturising your skin. For dry skin, it can be enough once a week.

However, if you have oily skin, you may go further. Try to stay away from over-exfoliation because it can cause redness and itching. You must ask your dermatologist how often it will not be bad for your skin.

Further, it depends on the method you are using. If you are using sugar or salt or products that contain such ingredients, you should limit exfoliation even if you have oily skin.

For dry, sensitive or combination skin, such exfoliation methods are not recommended. They can take a toll on your skin.

What you must do while exfoliating

Here are some essential pieces of advice.

  • Understand your skin type and choose those products that suit your skin. Products good for your sibling may not be good for you at all because of different skin types.
  • Talk to your dermatologist to get a better idea of products and how often you should exfoliate. Consult them in case of acne breakout.
  • Stop exfoliating if you are experiencing redness, itching, acne or other skin conditions.
  • Use moisturiser to maintain the pH level and avoid sun exposure immediately. If it is urgent to go out, you should use a sunscreen lotion with SPF 30. A dermatologist can suggest sunscreen based on your skin type.

The takeaway

Many people are funding expensive skincare treatments with doorstep loans today, but you can avoid frequent borrowing for this by adopting exfoliation practice.

This can lead to glowing and bright skin. The healthier you keep your skin, the fewer skin conditions you will suffer from.

You just need to be careful about choosing exfoliators, moisturisers and exfoliation methods. Otherwise, it will badly affect your skin.
